Updated 7/20/2022: 3 more cold pitch email templates for local marketing
Do cold pitch email templates work, specifically for small businesses that need local marketing services?
The cold SEO sales pitch still has value.
It doesn’t always seem that way due to the amount of spam each of us receives daily. That said, the cold pitch is a strategy you can use to identify viable leads ahead of time.
These days, the cold SEO pitch feels spammy.
It isn’t spammy in the right hands, but this perception is why it’s so important to approach this the right way. If you know how to pitch SEO services properly, you have a significant advantage over other digital marketing agencies.
Table of Contents
Small business objections or lack of awareness?
Small business owners have to juggle so many areas of their company just to have a smooth-running ship. Many are trying to do too much, and either DIY their marketing without proper education or they delegate to someone completely unqualified.
For some small business owners, their budget for marketing (or lack thereof) will play a role in how receptive they are to your pitch. For others, their time is scarce and invaluable.
Not all business owners are going to want to hear that your marketing plan is going to take time to see results. You’re going to need to show them a combination of quick wins, but also the bigger picture. It’s going to be a combination of educating them on the value of local marketing and highlighting how it will impact their business financially.
This is what pitching SEO successfully is all about.
You can demonstrate your ability to generate leads now and leads over the long term for your client with minimal risk to them.
Once you get the chance to pitch a lead, after that introductory phone call, you’ll be able to read your prospect and speak to what will resonate with them for their business. That cold SEO pitch email needs to get you that first conversation.
Why use SEO pitch emails to win small business clients?
Digital marketing email templates, when they’re used appropriately, produce incredible value for local agencies. A cold email pitch is viable when it has all the right ingredients (which I’ve previously discussed). Here’s a brief recap.
- A strong value proposition. This is a promise, a compelling reason why clients should choose to work with you instead of a competitor. Your value proposition, at its core, is about uniqueness. The biggest, single most compelling reason the prospect has to work with you. They need to understand the value of the investment. How are your services going to make them money (more efficiently than their efforts or lack of effort), and where can it save them time to focus on other aspects of their business?
- An irresistible offer. These offers are all about reducing/eliminating risk. You want to assume all or most of the risk clients take on when they work with you (e.g., discounts, special offers, introductory offers, etc.).
- Urgency triggers. These are motivators, reasons for potential clients to act now. Urgency triggers or facilitators of action. They motivate prospects to take action on your irresistible offer today, now. Loss aversion timers, bonuses, vanishing reports, and limited client slots are all effective urgency triggers.
- Social proof signals. Your prospects will be immediately suspicious, that’s an inherent part of the cold pitch process. Prospective clients don’t know you. They don’t know that you’re honest and aboveboard. We certainly won’t take your word for it either. Social proof (e.g., public reviews, third-party testimonials, influencer feedback, etc.) builds trust quickly.
- Risk reversals. Risk reversals transfer some or all of the risk of a transaction from the buyer to the seller (you). Risk reversals are uncomfortable for many sellers because it feels, on some level, as if you’re losing.
If you’d like to increase your odds of success dramatically, you need these five ingredients ahead of time.
But why?
Why use cold emails to pitch your services? There are a variety of reasons why local marketing firms would use cold pitch email templates.
- You're just starting out, and your ad/marketing budget is low.
- You're looking to go after larger, more established prospects, but you don't have a way in.
- You're a freelance marketer, but you don't have an established website.
- You need to identify your prospect's needs before you increase your ad spend.
There are a variety of reasons.
Do you know what to say in your SEO email pitch?
Here are a few cold email pitch templates that you can use to pitch your local marketing services.
I’m going to assemble the ingredients I mentioned earlier into a pitch. I’ll provide you with a few different templates you can use as entry points, but these templates should be used as a framework, a starting point.
The essential component to understand when using these templates, they need to be personalized.
First off, you only have enough time to take on a certain amount of clients. Be aware of your own time limitations. If you spend the time to invest in your prospecting, do the research, and really drill down into how you can help your potential client, you’re going to be that much more effective in closing the deal.
Remember also that finding the appropriate person and email to pitch is a big part of the battle. Writing an email directly to the owner of the business or for larger organizations, a business development executive, is going to be more effective than sending the pitch over to their general support email address.
Email finder services like VoilaNorbert and Hunter are going to be invaluable in that process. In fact, Hunter has put together a great guide for email subject lines.
Let’s dive in.
Does your agency offer ORM?
Cold Email Template #1: Online Review Management Services
Business owners, your clients, need you to pitch them.
Your clients are under an enormous amount of pressure to produce results. They’re aware of the results they need, but they’re not sure how to get there. Most clients have a rudimentary understanding of online reviews.
They know they’re powerful.
Most of them aren’t sure about the enormous potential impact a stellar review portfolio can have on their business.
Here’s a pitch you can use for review management services.
Subject: [Prospect Name], do you want [x]% more leads in [30/60/90 – x amount] days?
Body:
Hi [Prospect Name],
[Competitor], one of your competitors, has some negative one and two-star reviews from several unhappy customers.
You can avoid this.
In fact, there’s an easy (and free) way to reduce the negative reviews that would hurt your business.
A review performance and trend report.
In [x] minutes, I’ll outline your competitor’s strategy vs. yours, and how to learn from their mistakes so your business will continue to grow. I’ll do this free.

I have [x] slots left, schedule your free report, and review here [Calendar appointment link].

Cold Email Template #2: Review Management pitch email (Alternative)
What if they simply want help to deal with their lack of/negative reviews? Here’s a template you can use to accomplish that as well.
Subject: Are customers voting for you or your competitors?
Body:
Hi [Prospect Name],
A reviewer named [Reviewer Name] posted [this negative review] about [Competitor], your competitor today. They have a total of [93] one and two-star reviews.
The good news?
I can show you how to turn their negative reviews into positive reviews for your business. The [data shows] this could bring in [50]% more business for you.
My name is [Your Name], I’m the co-founder of [Agency Name]. My agency only takes on [x] clients at a time. I have [x] slots left.

Cold Email Template #3: Performance Based Online review Management Pitch
Here’s a template you can use to pitch local review management services using a performance report. The idea here is to educate the customer on how their online reviews can drive business.
You’re showing them how they look stacked up against competitors and then planting the seed for how your agency will be able to help them pass them.
Subject: [Prospect Name], do you want [x]% more leads in [30/60/90 – x amount] days?
Body:
Hi [Prospect Name],
Your online reviews can generate [X]% more leads in [30/60/90 – x amount] days. Do you know how?
It starts with a review performance report.
In [x] minutes, you can compare your competitor’s strategy vs. yours, and how to surpass them. This report is all education, no pitch. It’s also free, and there’s no obligation to buy.
Interested?
P.S. I have [x] slots left. Schedule your free report, and review here [Calendar appointment link].

Cold Email Template #4: Manual Review Management pitch email
Are customers still writing reviews during the pandemic? Research shows the answer to that question is yes – though not in the same volume as before. That will change once states open up again.
What does this mean?
Reviews are more important than ever; customers are looking for reassurance and evidence that they’ve selected the right provider (you). Here’s a modified review management pitch email you can use to go after larger, more profitable clients.
Subject: Here’s what [x] local prospects said about [prospect business].
Body:
Hi [Prospect Name],
We reached out personally to [x] local customers, and we analyzed [x online reviews] in your review portfolio. Here’s what your local customers told us about you.
- [X% of the customers we interviewed are currently looking for a lower-priced competitor
- X% have complaints about your services that they say haven’t been resolved
- X% have decided to leave, but they haven’t told you why (we found out why)
- X% of your prospects say they’d sign up immediately if you fixed two specific problems]
We recorded all of the [x] interviews we conducted manually. If you’d like to watch or listen to the interviews yourself, you can do that [here].
[Signature]
Here’s the thing about this review management strategy. It takes a lot of upfront work. This can produce a significant payday, but it needs to be worth it. How do you make sure it’s worth it? You find clients who are willing and able to pay for this upfront work (later on).
This means you’re looking for clients who:
- Bring in a minimum of $1 million in revenue annually
- Have a weak review portfolio
- See the value of reviews
- Have searched for, or requested help with marketing in the last year (you can use Google’s site search operator to comb through job sites like Indeed)
- Meet the other criteria you have set for an ideal client
Once you’ve identified a list of contenders, you’ll want to take an employee (preferably an influencer) to lunch. Be frank about why you want to take them to lunch; ask them what you’ll need to do to get your foot in the door. Doing this enables you to disqualify poor candidates ahead of time. You’ll want to do a lot of upfront work to qualify or disqualify clients ahead of time.
Cold Email Template #5: Quiz Based Local SEO Pitch
Small business clients don’t understand the interplay between local search, paid and organic search, content marketing, and social media. These cold emails give you the tools and resources you need to attract the kind of clients you want.
Use a tool like Typeform Quizzes or even a free tool like Google Forms to generate a quiz. Adding a quiz will also add an interactive element that draws a prospect out and resonates with them.
That will allow you to qualify your prospects, educate them, learn how much they already know about local marketing services, and prime them for what you’ll be able to offer in the next conversation.
Subject: Do you know how to protect your local business on Google?
Body:
Hi [Prospect Name],
Your [Competitor], they’re trying to [grab more keywords and rankings] in Google’s local search results.
The bad news?
You’re competing for the same keywords in Google. This free [quiz] shows you how to generate consistent traffic (and leads) from Google, without falling behind (no opt-in required). I can also show you whether you’re gaining or losing ground to your local competitors (e.g., rankings dropped by [x]% in the last 30 days).
Won’t cost you a penny. May I send you the quiz?

Cold Email Template #6: Quiz Based Local SEO Pitch (Alternative)
Here’s an alternate template you can use to snag their attention.
Subject: Do you know how to protect your local business on Google?
Body:
Hi [Prospect Name],
[Your Competitor], they’re trying to boost local search results in Google. It’s a smart idea, especially if you aren’t as visible for your keywords.
The bad news?
You’re competing for the same keywords in Google. This free quiz shows you how to generate consistent traffic (and leads) from Google, without falling behind.
I also include a free checklist that you can use to counteract the changes that they’re making in 45 days or less. Won’t cost you a penny.
May I send you the quiz?

Cold Email Template #7: Audit Based Local SEO Pitch
Local SEO can be an easier sell if you know where to look and how to make your approach. In this case, you’d be using an SEO audit to offer all of your services, but frame it in the context of content and visibility.
Use a trimmed down version of this 45 minute SEO audit process to produce something of value for these prospects. You can find some great local SEO audit guides here and here, or use our review management audit. These cold emails give you the “in” you need to successfully pitch your SEO services and content marketing.
Subject: [Prospect Name], want to generate [x]% more leads?
Body:
Hi [Prospect Name],
[Competitor], one of your competitors, did the hard work for you. They’ve produced [x]% more content than you in the last [x] days.
This is really good news!
They’ve done the hard work of figuring out what works. If you’re interested, this free audit will give you the information you need to make these changes on your own. It’s fast, easy, and free.

Cold Email Template #8: Audit Based Local SEO Pitch (Alternative)
If you’re a service provider, here’s another local SEO audit pitch template you can use to reach out to prospective clients.
Subject: [Prospect Name], local clients can’t find your business.
Body:
Hi [Prospect Name],
Coronavirus has slowed things down for businesses everywhere. When it picks back up, customers are going to need help from you or a competitor.
I see [competitor] in Google Maps, I can’t find your business for the following keywords.
[See for yourself].
- [keyword]

I can send you some free info to fix this, and it won’t cost you a penny. This free audit will show you how to:
- Make these changes on your own. It’s fast, easy, and free.
- Generate leads and revenue from these changes in 30 days or less.
- Freeze competitors out Google’s search results for specific, high-value keywords.

Cold Email Template #9: Technical SEO email pitch
Technical SEO is a simple and straightforward way for you to generate interest from prospective clients. It’s a specialize skill set that’s outside most small business owners expertise, but can pay massive dividends for local search traffic.
If you’re an experienced SEO, you can use your SEO tool of choice to find broken links, get crawl report data on a specific site, find 404 errors, 302 redirects, and more.
Here’s a Technical SEO template you can use to pitch your local marketing services.
Subject: [Prospect Name], these website errors are preventing you from showing up in Google…
Body:
Hi [Prospect Name],
I thought you’d like to know that customers are struggling to find your website due to several website errors. I did a quick scan of your website, and it’s available for you if you’re interested (no opt-in required).
My name is [Your Name], I’m the [title] of [Agency].
I made this short [1-page report] exclusively for your business. If you follow the instructions in the report, you can boost website traffic by an estimated [X% in less than 30 days]
Here’s that [report] again (it’s free).

When prospective clients are stressed out, it’s easy for them to neglect their website and marketing. Technical SEO is the low hanging fruit you can use to give your foot in the door with new clients.
Cold Email Template #10: Competitor Activity Pitch
This pitch harnesses competitor activity, using it to light a fire under your target company. With this pitch, you’re using a trustworthy tool or source to show prospects that their competitor is gaining ground on them.
What makes this strategy effective?
It’s not just the fact that they’re losing to a competitor, it’s you taking the time to quantify that loss. Your pitch should show them how just how badly they’re losing.
You need more.
If it’s bad enough, your prospect will be in denial. It’s a blow to the ego so they’re far more likely to seek to validate things on their own. Your pitch needs the following ingredients.
- Competitor activity (i.e., pulling ahead of your prospect)
- Quantifying the loss (i.e. what is the financial impact or value of this loss)
- How they can verify this loss on their own
- An irresistible offer to offset the loss
If you use established tools like Ahrefs or Semrush, you should be able to provide prospects with the trustworthy source and direction to get the data they need. It’ll also provide them with a way to verify this on their own.
If you include screenshots or links to walkthroughs comparing them, your pitch is even more compelling.
Here are some templates showing you how to use competitor activity.
Subject: [Decision Maker], [Prospect Company] just passed you
Body:
[Decision Maker],
[Competitor] just stole your place in Google search results for [## keywords]. If you don’t respond, they may keep your rankings permanently.
This is bad.
According to Semrush, you’re going to lose an estimated [##,### visits per day] and [$$$$] in revenue (see attached for more details).
See for yourself.
You have two ways out of this (1.) a big response to get your traffic and revenue back or (2.) the slow(er) and steady response to wear them down over time.

Cold Email Template #11: Prospect Failure Pitch
When it comes to marketing, your prospects aren’t as good as you are. If you’re a seasoned professional, you see all of the mistakes your prospects are making, and what it’s costing them. With this template you’re simply giving these prospects a dose of reality to help them prepare for what’s coming.
Subject: [Decision Maker], Your content is failing.
Body:
[Decision Maker],
Half of the content on your site is experiencing content decay. You’re losing rankings, visibility, traffic, and revenue. Most of the content on your site hasn’t been updated in 2 years!
[Competitor], has been stealing your rankings.
Updating your content isn’t enough. Google’s MUM update means your content needs # specific things if you want to get those rankings back.
Here’s a [one-page report] on [domain.com] showing you what you’ll need to change so don’t completely disappear from the first page of Google.
Get that report here.
[Signature]
There are a few considerations that need to be made here.
- Pitch the right person: You’re looking for a decision-maker who can approve the sale. In an ideal world, this person is struggling to do their job and they could use some help. They have the budget to spend but they don’t have the skills, education, or plan. They need help.
- Tell the kind truth: You’ll want to be gentle with your prospect’s ego. This isn’t the time to trash them, mock them, or out them as idiots. Criticism and contempt repel clients. Lead with emotion, then use data to justify the emotional payload you’ve just dropped on their heads. If you lead with logic, they’ll glaze over.
- Let them know it’s okay to say No: Smart agencies want clients who want them. If you have an abundance of leads and prospects, it’s easy to say no to a specific prospect.
Cold Email Template #12: Content Development Pitch
Your prospects want leads, sales, and revenue.
But their content sucks.
Here’s the problem; most prospects aren’t familiar with the ins and outs of content development to know that they need a content development plan and copywriting.
You do.
How do you get them to see the light?
You focus on results.
Let’s take a look at a template you can use to pitch content development services.
Subject: [Decision Maker], I can triple your lead flow in [19 days].
Body:
[Decision Maker],
Your content isn’t working.
I analyzed your website content using Semrush. All of your local competitors are beating you (see attached).
I don’t think this is your fault.
If you’re willing, I’d like to rewrite your content, free of charge. I believe I can double and yes, triple your lead flow in [19 days].
What’s the catch?
I do all of the work upfront for free.
You only pay for the leads that come in to your business. If my content fails to outperform yours, you haven’t lost anything. Buuuut, if I can double your lead flow, you pay me for each of the leads I’ve generated for you.
No contracts, no upfront feels for my work, pay only for results.

See what I did there?
I gave this prospect some bad news, their content is failing to perform. I provided them with the proof via a Semrush report analysis (they can do the same analysis for themselves). Then, I made an irresistible offer, one that a smart prospect (who needs help) will take.
This pitch sells like gangbusters.
There’s one caveat for you with this strategy. You’ll want to do this under certain conditions. (a.) You know the industry or the business model well. (b.) You’re able to control ownership of the landing pages, hosting, and the content. (c.) It’s your way or the highway. If you’re taking on all of the risk, clients don’t get to make demands.
If you do this, retain control of the work you create.
You can allow clients to make suggestions or recommendations and requests, but you’re in the driver’s seat here. If clients can’t meet these three expectations, you should walk, it’s that simple.
Cold Email Template #13: Web Design and Development Services Pitch
Web design and development is a complex service. It’s also incredibly challenging to pitch cold. It’s easier to pitch at lower price points (say $500 – $2,500). It’s still doable at the $10,000 to $50,000 level, but more difficult, and much harder at $50,000+.
For most small businesses, your portfolio is going to be a key driver of winning the business, but if you’re able to educate the business on the type of value their website is intended to deliver (traffic, leads, appointments, and sales), you’ll differentiate yourself from the typical marketing agency.
The key is showing concrete examples of how you will be able to improve their business. There are several components you can focus on:
- Simple copy changes
- Contact forms adjustments
- Product/service pages adjustments
- About us pages
- Full redesigns
- FAQ pages
- Links to review site listings or social media profiles
Here’s a template you can customize.
Subject: [Prospect Name], these 5 website hacks will boost your revenue
Body:
[Competitor] made some significant changes to their keywords and advertising recently. According to SpyFu, they’re converting [x]% more traffic.
This traffic could be yours.
Here are 5 changes I would make to your website and how I believe they would impact your sales:
- [Modification 1] | [Predicted Result 1
- [Modification 2] | [Predicted Result 2
- [Modification 3] | [Predicted Result 3
- [Modification 4] | [Predicted Result 4
- [Modification 5] | [Predicted Result 5]
You’re in full control here. My agency would be able to show you definitive results.
You’ll be able to play with these website hacks, testing the effect it will have on your traffic.
What do you think?

Subject: [Prospect Name], these clients are looking for your help
Body:

They were searching for you on [social network].
Here’s how you can help them find you (free of charge).
I’m offering this free social media [checklist] to you. It gives you the tools you need to convert [x]% more customers month-over-month (no opt-in required). [Client], a client of ours, boosted [metric (engagement/followers/shares)] by [x]%.

Industry-specific templates
In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, various industries have been impacted differently. It’s critical that you’re sensitive to how each industry is handling the change in user behavior. Some industries are thriving while others have lost a significant amount of business and might be on the verge of shutting down altogether.
As you look for prospects to pitch, companies that are doing well might have additional budget to invest in their digital marketing and advertising. Industries that are suffering might have a certain amount of desperation that you don’t want to exploit.
I’ve put together some templates for both type, but always try your best to enter these conversations from a position of empathy.
Here’s a list of templates for industries that are stable or doing relatively well during the downturn.

You can win clients over with cold pitch email templates
Is cold pitching a viable strategy today?
Absolutely, but it’s essential to approach this in the right way. You know why it’s important; you don’t want to be perceived as a spammer. Cold emails, when they’re handled appropriately, can still produce incredible value for local marketing agencies.
Use the right ingredients.
Create a strong value proposition, an irresistible offer, and urgency triggers. Use social proof and risk reversals as de-fusers, and you increase your odds of success dramatically. Do it consistently, and you’ll discover the obvious.
Your cold pitch has value.
